If you’ve walked a Kansas prairie in late summer, chances are you’ve seen the brilliant yellow blooms of the Partridge Pea. This native annual legume is more than just eye candy—it’s a workhorse plant for pollinators, birds, soil health, and native habitat restoration projects.

🔍 Plant ID:

Chamaecrista fasciculata

  • Common Name: Partridge Pea

  • Bloom Time: Mid to late summer

  • Height: 1–3 feet

  • Leaves: Fern-like, sensitive (they close when touched)

  • Flowers: Bright yellow with reddish centers

  • Habitat: Sunny prairies, field edges, disturbed ground

Why It Matters

1.

Pollinator Magnet

Partridge Pea is a top-tier nectar source for native bees, butterflies, and even ants (which feed on nectar from special glands outside the flowers). You’ll often spot bumblebees and sulfur butterflies feeding on it.

2.

Wildlife Benefit

  • Quail and turkey love it—partridge pea provides cover for broods and the seeds are a favored food.

  • Deer browse the young shoots.

  • Dove and songbirds will pick up the seeds in the fall.

3.

Soil Builder

As a legume, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for future plantings and making it a great companion in native restorations and food plot mixes.

How We Use It in Habitat Projects

At Turkey Creek Lawn Care and Habitat, we often include partridge pea in:

  • Native prairie seed mixes

  • Pollinator strips

  • CRP and wildlife habitat restorations

  • Erosion control areas

It’s fast-growing, helps suppress weeds, and thrives in poor soils.
