Summer Flower Bed Maintenance Tips for a Thriving Garden

Summer is the season when your flower beds should be bursting with color—but hot weather and dry conditions can make that a challenge. At Turkey Creek Lawn Care, we’ve helped flower beds thrive all over McPherson, and we’re sharing our top tips to keep your blooms healthy, happy, and full of life all season long.

1. Water Deeply, Not Daily

Shallow, frequent watering leads to weak root systems. Instead, water deeply 2–3 times per week. This helps roots grow deeper, making your plants more drought-resistant. Water in the early morning to minimize evaporation and reduce the risk of mildew.

2. Mulch to Beat the Heat

Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch like shredded bark or compost. It locks in moisture, keeps the soil cool, and blocks weeds. As it breaks down, it also improves soil health naturally.

3. Deadhead for More Blooms

Snip off spent flowers to encourage new growth and keep your beds looking clean. This simple step keeps many flowering plants blooming longer into the summer.

4. Monitor for Pests and Disease

Heat and humidity can bring unwanted guests like aphids, spider mites, and mildew. Check your plants regularly. For minor problems, natural solutions like neem oil or insecticidal soap are often enough.

5. Fertilize Wisely

Summer bloomers need nutrients, but don’t overdo it. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4–6 weeks and avoid fertilizing during extreme heat.

6. Weed and Edge Weekly

Tidy edges and weed-free soil make your beds stand out. A little weekly attention can make a huge difference in appearance and plant health.

7. Plan for Continuous Blooms

Mix early, mid, and late-summer flowers for constant color. Some of our favorites include:

  • Salvia

  • Daylilies

  • Coneflowers

  • Black-eyed Susans
